5 Edmonton Wedding ideas to make your wedding your own

Edmonton is a beautiful city and a fantastic place to live. We are the City of Champions and the Festival City. Innovation and change are part of our DNA, and we are a city that has a vibrant history and a pioneering spirit. We are a cultural centre with a vibrant arts community and an ethnically diverse population.

It is this mix that makes us great, and also means it is an ideal place to host a wedding. From the gorgeous river valley to the rolling prairie’s and the Rocky Mountains within a short driving distance, Edmonton has endless options to create a wedding that is anything but typical.

Planning an Edmonton wedding that has the right balance of elements can be a challenge, as is knowing how to put your own personalized stamp on things. As a local based wedding planner, Corina Waldie shares five ideas for creating the perfect personalized Edmonton wedding:

1. Choose a theme and own it

A wedding theme can be any number of things. It could be a colour or a pattern, a memorable vacation, a specific culture or country, reflective of a bygone era, inspired by your favourite show or movie or, even just a few words that are important to you. It could also be some combination of above. You are limited only by your imagination.

There are many options out there when choosing a theme. It can really be as simple as a favourite colour or as complex as a full-blown Nerd wedding that features all the things you and your partner love.

Then once you have a theme, own it.

If it’s a colour, use it as much as possible. Weddings that are built around bold colour are on trend and are stunning when done right.

Is your theme from a bygone era? Use the clothing, fashion, food, and home design trends from that time period as inspiration.

Or if it’s from a memorable vacation or favourite country, let that area, its history, culture, architecture and food, inspire your planning and design.

The other great thing about themes is it immediately provides a focus for your planning. It will reduce option overwhelm and make it easy to find vendors that are a great fit for your wedding.
However, a word of caution. Themes can be overdone. It is essential to establish a strategy for your idea early on. Be intentional in every decision so that you’re creating a cohesive experience.

2. Serve food and drink that makes your soul happy

What’s your favourite food? Favourite drink? Do you have a treasured memory around a certain kind of food?

Food is an area that’s often ignored since many venues and caterers have standard packages. Couples often choose solely based on budget and move forward. However, when you consider that food is often the most substantial portion of the budget, it should be something that you should try and personalize. Many caterers and venues will design a custom menu if you ask.

What if you were to be able to serve your favourite mac n’ cheese as a passed appetizer, or have your grandmother’s apple pie recipe served for dessert? Maybe there could be a recreation of food you had on your first vacation together. What if the bar could pour your favourite whisky, or serve your favourite martini?

Food does more than feed us, it’s meant to delight the senses, and is at the heart of almost every gathering, weddings included. By building a menu around things that matter to you, it’s a great way to share some of your selves and your story on your wedding day.

3. Choose some unexpected entertainment

Making sure your guests are entertained is an essential part of planning a wedding. Solid entertainment is always a good investment. Many weddings will have a disc jockey or band, and possibly a photo booth of some kind, but there’s plenty of opportunities to think outside the box and entertain your guests in other ways.

How about hiring strolling acrobats to pour wine?

Or hiring a group of swing dancers to entertain guests during dinner?

Perhaps you have a strolling magician doing close-up tricks during cocktail hour?

Or even a fire dancer? (check with your venue though first!)

These are just but a few of the ways to bring some unexpected entertainment to your wedding. Edmonton also has a diverse arts community too, so these ideas are just the beginning of what’s possible. Be intentional and select entertainment that makes sense to your wedding and trust me, it’s something that your guests will never forget.

4. Treat your guests to the best Edmonton has to offer

Chances are, if you choose to host your wedding in Edmonton, you live here or are from here. Featuring things from your town is a great way to personalize your wedding, and Edmonton is no exception. There are many ways to highlight the best of Edmonton in the details of your wedding, and in the time before or after the wedding.

Feature Edmonton Made Products

The easiest way to feature Edmonton during the wedding is to look for local suppliers of goods and services that you need for your wedding.

For example, you could serve up local craft beer. Edmonton has many excellent breweries. Chances are if you check with your venue or caterer, they may be able to order this in for you.

You can also ask your florist to source flowers from a local floral farm, such as Birchwood Meadows. Not only would you be supporting a local business, but you’re helping the environment too.

For favours, you could look to offering up some custom Edmonton-made chocolate. We have a few fantastic chocolatiers in town, and some will even make custom ones, just for your wedding.

We even have local wedding dress designers who can custom build you the dress of your dreams.

Treat Your Guests to an Edmonton Experience

Outside the wedding, if you have out-of-town guests staying for a few days, how about treating them to an Edmonton experience?

This could be as simple as a trip across the river on the streetcar that crosses the High-Level Bridge to visit the legislature grounds, a visit to the new Royal Alberta Museum, or to the West Edmonton Mall. You could also plan a more formal tour or activity too.

What about whisking your guests through town on an Edmonton Brewery Tour? Or treating them to a canoe trip down the North Saskatchewan River? You could even arrange a custom tour of the river valley via Segway at any time of the year.

Edmonton also has a plethora of fantastic restaurants to visit too, and if you’re hosting your wedding in the summer, you could also check out one of our many awesome festivals.

Whatever you choose, there’s plenty of ways to make Edmonton shine in the details of your wedding day.

5. Draw on Your Own Story

Ultimately, your wedding is about you and your future spouse and amid all the things that go into planning a wedding, it is easy to lose sight of this.

The best weddings are those that are deeply personal and share the story of the couple getting married. Storytelling is something that has drawn people together for millennia, and your wedding is one of the best opportunities to share your story and who you are with your guests.

Sharing your own story is the most critical part of personalizing a wedding. By weaving pieces of you into the various elements of your wedding, it makes your story come alive to your guests and turns your wedding into a one-of-a-kind celebration. You could draw on your interests, hometowns, personalities, past vacations, where you met favourite memories or family history for inspiration.

No matter where you’re getting married, what your theme is, or who is in attendance, sharing your story is paramount to having a personalized wedding. Once the wine is drunk and the food is eaten, the thing that your guests will carry with them will be the memory of the story you’ve told them.

So be intentional to make sure that every one of the hundreds of decisions you’ll make while planning your wedding rings true to who you are and your story, for that is the ultimate in personalized weddings.
